Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
